Studentships: Masters - Robotics About the job: The CSIR Modelling and Digital Science (MDS) unit has openings for Masters Studentships in robotics. These will be based in the Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems (MIAS) emerging research area (ERA). MDS has a strong focus on human capital development and the creation and dissemination of new scientific knowledge. It also collaborates with national and international partners in research and development (R&D) activities. The MIAS group undertakes innovative research in field robotics. The MIAS group carries out research in areas including navigation, machine learning, computer vision and planning. Information on the group can be found at: csir.co.za/mias/. The positions are based in Pretoria. Research Topics: Applicants will be expected to conduct research towards a Master’s degree on a topic that is related to one of the group projects. Applicants will be required to be engaged in a MIAS project during their postgraduate studies. Studentships would be assigned to projects in one of the following broad areas: Image processing and computer vision related to a group project on active vision for intelligent autonomous systems; Mining robotics research including activities such as exploration and motion planning, drivable region detection, navigation and mapping and sensor fusion; or Outdoor navigation including localisation and mapping. All of the projects involve computer applications development and so require programming knowledge. Requirements: BEng, BSc Honours or equivalent in the following fields: Electrical, electronic or mechatronic engineering. Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals who take ownership and initiative. Ability to work well under pressure as part of a team is essential. The successful candidates must be Willingness to work in a research environment that serves both local and international clients and stakeholders. Prior working experience on projects that involve extensive programming on open source environment(s) will be advantageous. Applicants must be familiar with at least one of the following programming languages (C, C++, C #, Matlab or Python). Applicants must have an interest in robotics, although previous experience in the field is not required. Applicants should have an interest in implementation, as well as theory, as projects involve implementation of applications on robot platforms. Applicants must attach the following documents: Certified copies of the applicant’s latest academic results or transcript. Certified copies of tertiary qualifications.
