hocking and sad news out of Mexico today: new counts show that the Monarch population returning to Mexico has been cut in half (after another drop of 50% the year before that). To give you a perspective, the average monarch count over the last 15 years translates into about 350 million butterflies. This year only 33 million made it to Mexico. Much of the blame may lie with the wide-scale adoption of genetically modified crops that are resistant to the weed-killer glyphosate, also known as Round Up. This change in our agricultural system has led to the near extermination of milkweed, which Monarchs rely on, from huge swaths of our country.
