https://youtube/watch?v=aRmhneo5A48 MOVIE CLIP OF THE DAY - Speed (1994) (Trailer) This year marks the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking action/suspense classic. Full of explosions, chase scenes, cheesy 90s one liners galore. Speed cemented then 80s and 90s rom-com idols Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock into A-list superstardom. The late great Dennis Hopper was also at his maniacal best playing a deranged ex-cop with a very complicated plan that is just complicated enough to be a whole lot of fun. Reeves would of course go on to be hugely successful in yet another famous action film made immortal by the pop culture hurricane it created: The Matrix. Bullock would become one of the most sought-after award-winning actress in the movie business. Hard to believe (looking back on it now 20 years later--God, has it really been that long already!!!!) that it all began with a very simple premise and some high-driving fun at the multiplex. Despite navigating a terrain of very familiar Hollywood movie staples and cliches, the reason Jan De Bonts Speed holds up so well to this day is not just because of the great action set pieces, the Academy Award winning editing (by legendary John Wright) or break-neck suspense built with a pristine pace. No, it is solely because of the expertly-crafted script and memorable characters. A successful film that transformed modern cinema to a whole new level. Alas, the modern blockbuster as we know it was born. Speed is an entertaining picture that sidesteps on a tired one-dimentional conventions to favor a more exciting experience than its famous movie predecessors (whilst still poking fun at those said conventions). Alas, a new cinema classic was born. Joe Morton, Jeff Daniels and Alan Ruck co-star. Whoa....dude, what a rush!
