https://youtube/watch?v=x6t7vVTxaic Thoughts on Selma: This is not only one of those movies that is amazing, but its one that we need. Selma is a film that lets us look back at our past to think about whats changed and what hasnt while also being a beautifully crafted picture with great acting, writing, and directing. Ava DuVernay has created a film about an important time of history that feel real because the people feel real. Martin Luther King is played by David Oyelowo who is incredible at capturing the mannerisms of King while making him feel like a real person. The credit for the great complex portrayal of King also has to be given to writer Paul Webb. King is portrayed as someone who believes what hes doing and knows its right, but hes also tired and doesnt want to see more people hurt by what theyre doing. Webb and DuVernay make the great choice to not only focus on Martin Luther Kings influence on the Selma marchs, but also how everyone was affected by it. I love how they give Kings wife Coretta so much weight in how she knows where she needs to be but is fearful for her husband and children. One thing I like about DuVernays work here is that with her direction and Bradford Youngs cinematography, they film scenes with lighting and movement that feels natural and makes these moments feel real. They also have many moments that are quiet and are meant to to give each character a sense of something real. Overall, Selma is a great film that serves as a reminder that its always important to recognize the past so that we dont repeat it. The discrimination of African-Americans and other races is a horrible and stupid thing that has caused nothing but misery and hatred for people. A movie like Selma shows that weve gotten further in ending this inequality, but we still have a long way to go.
