i have yet to mention the Schoppe side of the family, i feel remiss. there were tons of great times on that side of the family too growing up. Aunt Peggy and Uncle Dave had motor cross bikes, how much fun it was to see their smiles when they were covered in mud. Uncle George n Aunt Marys i cant count the things i did there. between learning about a milking farm and dairy processing and how the baby cows were named after their mothers. i thought that was especially neat and i even can say i got to name one. Johnny Jump Up.. his mother was Juniper i believe. it had to be a J name you see. sadly he was headed to the supper table as veal, a favorite of mine. i got to feed him his bottles though. Gramp and Gram Schoppe were a lovely couple. but we were especially quiet near them for the most part. it was explained to me somewhere along the line that children in this home were more of the seen variety and less of the heard. i loved it though. Aunt Susan would walk in and her cheeks would be so bright and red, her smile as quick as her loving hugs. i can still hear her voice too. Aunt Anne had a few kids of her own and i knew fun with my cousins as i visited their home. i recall a tree house with a very long rope. i never did get to go up. oh well. its still in the memory bank. :) i have to admit i owe an apology to the Schoppe side of the family, i have long neglected them and only speak with a few now. i even have to ask whether or not theyre an Aunt or Uncle by marriage, but their number is 9 and with marriages doubled and with my Mom keeping everyone updated, i just havent sought out my Dads family much. i hope if they read this or hear of it, that theyre able to forgive a niece or cousin whos never kept stamps on hand nor had the desire to interrupt anyones schedule. mine is always open as i have been disabled many years now. one last memory of the Gram and Gramp Schoppe household is a wonderful one i think. i dont know what brought the family together but it was a summer reunion at their home. someone had brought a long watermelon that was set into a basket and lowered into the well where the water was pumped from. i dont recall firmly, but i think a hand pump also was on the cement lid, i could be wrong though. it was a picnic event, tables set up behind the big white house. my Granddads Antique Barn would have a door ajar often enough and it was always neat walking through the place to see the wonders hed carefully stocked. it had a ..smell.. dusty.. old.. and most assuredly pleasant. there were a lot of our family there that day. and i remember my Granddads smile as his eyes crinkled and the lights would twinkle in them. my Grandmother so softly standing in support and love, rubbing his back or shoulders as she listened to whatever tale was being told. Granddad Schoppe had some Thanksgiving traditions too.. maybe thatll be the next post.. i need to stop a few though .. hope youve enjoyed :)
