is thinking, so, you get a job and do it to the best of your ability for four years. One night the boss calls and says you shouldnt bother coming in the morning. You are done. No cause. No notice. Politics is a rough, expensive, exhausting, often dirty and very insecure vocation. Very good people get unceremoniously thrown overboard. Often they are ditched not for anything they did wrong but because the bosses turned against their leaders policies. Often those unpopular policies were medicine we desperately needed but didnt like the taste of. When that happens, and four or eight or 12 years have been taken out of the middle of what may have been an excellent career, it can be very difficult or impossible to get back to where you would have been if you had never been elected. I dont think politicians pay or pensions are at all too generous considering all they risk and sacrifice to the job. Yes, sure, some of them have their best gig ever as elected representatives but, if they get it and dont deserve it, that is our fault more than theirs. We impose demands and expectations on politicians we dont on far more lucrative vocations. Not many of us are willing to pay the price or subject ourselves to the scrutiny, abuse and gruelling campaigns.
