ited colours IT WAS just a couple of years ago Cesc Fabregas told Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that he wanted to go ‘home’ to Barcelona. Now Manchester United want to bring him back to England. How would that make you feel as an Arsenal supporter? What a sight it would make for Gunners fans to see Fabregas and Robin van Persie lining up for Manchester United against Arsenal next season. That’s why there are so many big obstacles standing in the way of David Moyes’ attempts to sign the Spanish midfielder and bring him back to the Premier League. Not that I wouldn’t love to see him over here again, mind. Fabregas is a top player, a world-class player. He can move the ball like a dream and score goals. And, if there is one area where Manchester United are short, it is in midfield. Fabregas, now 26, is an all- rounder. Yes, United have Michael Carrick but after that they are pretty well short of top-class players in that area. Paul Scholes has retired and Tom Cleverley, England international though he is, has still to prove himself at a consistent level. Barcelona insist Fabregas is not for sale but everyone has their price of course. The overriding factor is that the player himself just a couple of seasons ago wanted to go home to Spain, to the club where he started as a boy. It hasn’t gone well for him. He’s great but not quite as good as Xavi or Iniesta so he hasn’t been playing that much. That’s why he is being talked about in £25million terms. However, had he stayed at Arsenal and cemented his place there as captain and midfield star, he could be a £40m player. It might not always be good to follow your heart. But if he were to come back to England just two years after making his emotional journey back to Spain, then that would tell you everything you need to know about football these days. I’m sure it’s not just Manchester United who would like him back, though, as Arsenal would jump at the chance too. It’s weird how so many players seem to leave that club — Fabregas, van Persie, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri. I don’t know why but there must be some reason that makes them want to leave Arsenal. But Arsenal would want him back at the Emirates and Fabregas would undoubtedly be a great asset to any team in the Premier League. That said, I just can’t see him signing somehow. I don’t think even David Moyes at Manchester United will be able to persuade him to leave the Nou Camp or to persuade Barcelona to sell. A lot of people have wondered if signing Fabregas would have any effect on keeping Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford but I don’t see any link there. England striker Rooney’s problems with the club come from a different direction. Maybe things have gone too far there now, maybe it is the case that he will be leaving. There may be that there is no way back for Rooney and the club now. This could well explain why United are making such a big play for Fabregas. They are desperately short in that area of the pitch — and losing Rooney would leave a big hole for United to fill. Fabregas is a big name — and he could fill it. Back Top
