just recently came across an old video of the great drum - TopicsExpress

just recently came across an old video of the great drum innovator, Yogi Horton, that A Scott Galloway shared on his page. I hadnt seen it in a while. I really think that every drummer (and musician for that matter) should check out this 90 minute clinic. So many pearls of wisdom expressed in a much more organic way than just talking about rhythms and beats. Students in my advanced ensemble know of my distaste for the irresponsible use of cymbals and clutter. Yogi had a way of economizing that allowed him to be very free and expressive without orchestrally ruining the music. This is becoming a lost art in favor of meaningless 16th triplets and crash cymbals always hit with the same dynamic intensity. But I digress.. Check out how Yogi seems to play without hitting any two things at the same time during certain parts of the vid. Just amazing. Also, his knowledge of the history of groove drumming is a testament to his core musical belief system. Thats why he was one of the most sought after session drummers in NYC and consequently a huge influence on any drummer who heard him back in the 70s-80s. Just to wrap it up, Yogi was one of my dearest friends and I cherish the years that I was blessed to record and perform with him. Please spread this one around, so we can start to bring some sanity, soulfulness, and true funk back into the collective consciousness of the new generation. ~ DB
