line6/amplifi/ You might have heard of this new amp from LINE 6, it’s getting a lot attention and was just unveiled at NAMM 2014. From a distance they look like a nice combo amp with a deep oxblood cloth- classic, almost vintage. When you look closer it is something very different. It’s a modeling amp (which LINE 6 has been doing for years and is their bread and butter) that is controlled and richly tweeked from an iPad (which no one has done ever). There are pros and cons to this. Pros; you can tweek this amp remotely, from the other side of the stage, or the rehearsal room. You can choose from a large bank of pre loaded amp sounds. You can save and share new experimental sounds; this is a convenient amp. You can stream music to this amp. In addition to the 12” (or 8” on the 75W model) Celestion it has 2 tweeter speakers and 2 mid-bass drivers, so we bet streaming music sounds quite nice as well as guitar tones at low volumes. Affordable price range. Cons; we can’t find many. It is a solid state amp, so if you are looking for true tube qualities, they aren’t going to be here. However we feel the flexibility outweighs any negatives and the lack of tubes, should be replaced with the range of tone replication added by the tweeters and drivers. So in conclusion, this amp makes a great A) hifi stereo, B) toy, C) practice amp and D) with a 12” celestion and 150W, touring amp.
