me: But that sort of solution will be quite costly - to the tune of several thousand and historically you have always been very budget conscious [translation: a cheapskate]. It should be addressed through training and disciplinary action. Samuel [name changed to protect the guilty]: I know the cost is high but I want multiple layers preventing viruses from coming in and the person factor wont change. me: Okay, Ill have the quote ready for you tomorrow. Ill order as soon as you give the approval. me: *stayed up until 2:00 writing up the complete proposal, emails it off, receives acknowledgement of receipt the next day from Bart* [fast forward two weeks] Samuel: We are getting concerned that we will not meet the deadline. We havent heard anything. me: frank [name changed to protect the innocent] received my email the very next day and acknowledged it, after thanking me. *whips out smartphone but doesnt have to open it because. . . * Bart: Yes yes yes thats right. I dropped the ball on that. *repeat of first discussion, skipping the proposal and approval part.* Bart: wed like to upgrade your proposal with a higher end unit. me: thats great, Im glad youre understanding the benefits of preventive measures and also allowing for growth now. Let me get a quote from the manufacturer and Ill await your approval before ordering. [fast forward two business days; no approval yet] Samuel: we had the phone vendor do the data too, they put in cisco [rabadged Linksys] routers. me: ummmm, that doesnt have the virus or malware scanning on http, https, email, ftp, ssh, vpn, or any of the other features you wanted, plus its vpn function works like the sonicwall you hated so much - you know, connect using IE, it uses an IE plugin and does vpn over the browser and slows everything down, and also doesnt have throughput that at least matches your internet connection. Good thing you upgraded your Comcast connection only to have the router cut bandwidth by half again, eh? I am firing this client as soon as I upgrade their server so I can get my hardware back (two hard drives, one RAID card, one of Biyns RAID cards). I am so sick of dealing with cheapskates. I am so over it. . . and people wonder why I hate working in IT. I may be very good at it, but that doesnt mean I have to like it.
