myPolice Maryborough IMMEDIATE EMAIL NOTIFICATION White Ribbon Day a success on the Fraser Coast • • • • White Ribbon day was conducted on Monday November 25. White Ribbon Day is about men saying no to violence against women and children. Men need to make sure they don’t commit or condone violence against women. Women also need to say no to violence against women. The Fraser Coast took a stand against violence Monday with a number of events taking place. Zonta International Maryborough hosted a breakfast with guest Speaker Sergeant Hayley Skyring the Domestic & Family Violence Coordinator. Sgt Skyring reminded attendees of the confronting statistics related to violence against women such as: • at least 1 woman in Australia is killed each week by a current or former partner. • That 36% of all homicides take place in a domestic setting and 73% of those involved a woman being killed by a male partner (Australian Institute of Criminology) • Intimate partner violence affects 30% of women world wide. A Mens Forum was then held at lunchtime bringing together men from a wide range of services to show that men are standing up to say no. After guests speakers including Acting Inspector Briese and Mayor Gerard O’Connell a lively discussion took place in relation to a variety of issues.
