/next rant/ Another more common argument against transgenic - TopicsExpress

/next rant/ Another more common argument against transgenic crops (also dubbed GMOs) is that theyre simply not safe to eat, despite a mass consensus by several international scientific institutions saying otherwise. See here: proactiontranshuman.wordpress/2013/07/24/why-am-i-pro-gmo/ The problem I have with this argument isnt just one, but many! Ive already pointed out one of my problems with the argument above - science proving the opposite! - but another problem I have with it is the fact that its a hypocritical argument. Anti-GMO activists will try and use any supposed case of transgenic foods harming consumers or the environment as evidence that transgenic foods in general are bad. This is a hypocritical argument because, when applied to their precious organic foods, or any non-transgenic foods for that matter, one would wonder why in the hell there isnt an anti-organic movement? OH, thats right! Because the rest of us arent hypocritical idiots who believe single cases of crop contamination thus means all these crops are bad! Examples of non-transgenic food contamination: 1. The 2008 Canadian listeriosis outbreak was a widespread outbreak of listeriosis in Canada linked to cold cuts from a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto, Ontario. 22 people died and there were 57 total confirmed cases. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Canada_listeriosis_outbreak 2. XL Foods had to recall 4,000 tonnes of beef due to e.coli contamination in 2012, resulting in 18+ people taken in due to illnesses from said contamination. inspection.gc.ca/food/information-for-consumers/food-safety-investigations/xl-foods/timeline/eng/1349149063487/1349149874246 3. In 2011, 3,950 people became infected from a rare strain of e.coli in sprouts which were produced...get this...in a organic farm in Germany! 53 people died as a result. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Germany_E._coli_O104:H4_outbreak And guess what? Neither Monsanto, nor any of us pro-GMOers, are rallying against organic foods or non-transgenic meats, calling for their international ban. In fact, to increase the irony here, in Monsanto facilities, all staff are given a variety of foods in their cafeteria - organic, conventional, and transgenic. And yet were led to believe that Monsanto is the evil one here when its the anti-GMO activists who are the only ones trying to dictate what people should and should not eat. /end rant/
