nps.gov/alpo/index.htm Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is just a short drive (about 30 minutes) from Johnstown Flood National Memorial. There visitors can learn about the Allegheny Portage Railroad, the most important of the five divisions of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal. The Portage was used to haul canal boats, passengers, and freight over the Allegheny mountains.
