open letter to the 70000 people running for office in this county this time.... SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH......I hear lots of talk and buzz about tourism...lots of talk....and bringing business into the this county from outside (I think we all remember the Ethanol plant debacle...did folks know that every single farmer at every single meeting was opposed to it on practical grounds...it would have taken over 100 semis of corn EVERY DAY to have given that plant what they needed...we knew that much acreage did not exist for 50 miles around us and no one listened and now we have a great two car semi truck garage on Flat fork road to show for it.) But that is besides my other point. I have been in the tourism business before I farmed and in the restaurant industry. 90% of the people who go to the Smokey mountains NEVER GO IN THE WOODS! they shop and dine and go to a waterpark and lay in a hotel swimming pool... The people that go in the woods are normally the young and fit...but guess what,,,80% of the wealth in the nation is held by people over 65 years old....not the kayakers and rock climbers how come, but by their parents and grandparents who GAVE them money to go....which comes to my final tie in point... yeah....lots of talk about new business...the next time we( as a county) go begging for yet another grant, or another hand out from the feds, lets make it for something that can help the businesses HERE ALREADY !!! Pave a parking lot, or get a new roof or put in an AC until so the whole store does not smell like mildew....do something for the back bone and not the hopeful tentacles... one of the greatest success stories in the SE for turning a dying town around in the mountains is Helen Georgia....(if you can read this you can Google the town and read the history) step up people, its time repost all you like... best!
