open.spotify/track/4jwYtnIWC5IkXvreYfar8e After a progressive rock masterpiece by Kerry Livgren comes one of the same caliber by Steve Walsh. Because Steve wrote it, it emphasizes his virtuoso keyboarding like no other Kansas song before or to follow. Although Kansas has always had long instrumental sections in their songs, this is their first all-instrumental. It is very properly named, as the song is fast-paced and energetic, and it is probably Kansass answer to what bands like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer and Yes were doing in the British progressive rock scene. The Spider is far more progressive that anything else Steve had written before or since and is probably his most complex song. I wouldnt have believed the song could have gotten any better until I heard the live version on Two for the Show, which featured a five-minute Phil Ehart drum solo as an introduction that fits the spider theme perfectly. The glory of the song is cut short when the segue begins, and the sound of the heavy bass-drum of Portrait comes in.
