opinion By Allen Sie-Winnie George You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:43-45a. IT IS EVIDENT BY THIS TEXT THAT THE WORD OF GOD has a philosophy of tranquility that Holy Scripture stands in a most direct and uncompromising opposition to what is usually the most cherished attitude of the human mind, an inclination toward retribution. The theme of this message in celebration of the Independence of Liberia. its one hundred and fifty- eight years of self-governance is, THIS IS LIBERIAS HOUR, an hour in which Liberians ought to answer a question; the question is this, why do Liberians fail to establish peace? The text tells Liberians not to render evil for evil, to discourage ourselves in accommodation of special indulgences to which we are drawn, but loving which for more than a century we have neglected our country, Liberia. With respect to the way Liberians must govern Liberia to operate civilly as one people, the text implies that we Liberians ought to exercise tolerance and observe our own mistakes and the bad tendencies of our minds. The text is in harmony with the idea of deliverance from retribution, which we the people of Liberia, if we uphold this deliverance, would bring about a peaceful solution to our ongoing conflict when we put the needs of Liberia first. I feel obligated to pass on the wisdom of the text to Liberians as a matter of immediacy and expediency, with the general hope that Liberians will never again act contrary to deliverance from retribution, but will remain committed effectively and decisively henceforth and forever as a civil society which the present hour demands of us. The reason is evident: THIS IS LIBERIAS HOUR. This is the hour when we Liberians are to relinquish from our nation, and ourselves aggressively and radically, all avenues and approaches that foster reprisals. Above all, we are to preserve our integrity as a people and nation by denouncing, confronting, and honestly with one mind, seek the destruction of tribal bigotry which has nearly caused the demise of the Liberian nation and people. WE CAN BEGIN TODAY!
