I have always felt drawn to charity work, but this was bolstered recently while watching the news on Somalia with my mom. We were watching a coverage of two elderly Somali ladies, one was blind and the other was also in fragile condition. They were making a plea for help; they didn’t have food, shelter, and anyone rely on for help. That is when I decided that this was my calling. I did some research into existing charities, but came up with no findings. So I took it upon myself to help the elderly in Somalia. I founded Hooyo iyo Aabe in February 2013, my group and I have since developed a plan to help the elderly in Somalia. Our first initiative is developing a nursing home in Medina, Somalia, where we have a plot of land. We plan to grow and expand into other regions in Somalia. I founded Hooyo iyo Aabe to break the cycle of isolation for the forgotten elderly. •Our aim is to provide help for the elderly people who have lost their loved once in the war, and have not a single person to turn to; their poor physical and mental conditions prevent from being able to look after themselves. •Our aim is to provide them with the support systems i.e. shelter and a community of people in the nursing home.
