presents Feast (2005). The late night patrons of a grungy dive bar on the outskirts of a Southwestern Texas town are visited one night by a blood-soaked man warning of an impending attack by vicious, slimy creatures. It isnt long before the monsters come-a-calling, forcing the disparate group of strangers to work together to make it through the night. Reality shows have produced many horrifying things (Honey Boo Boo and The Swan, were looking at you) but in 2004, Project Greenlight, the Bravo series that helped fledgling filmmakers bring their vision to the screen with the guidance of executive producers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, actually produced a REAL horror movie. And it wasnt half bad. Damon and Affleck brought Wes Craven on board for genre cred and a producers credit and handed over directorial reins to virtually untested novice director John Gulager. Gulager manages to find the right tone for the film -- even at its goriest (and it does get wonderfully over-the-top gross) theres still an undercurrent of silly -- and makes his low budget work for him. The game cast, including Gulagers B-movie actor father Clu, and a breakneck pace help too. Unfortunately the film became lost in the shuffle of the Weinstein brothers split from Disney and ended up getting a perfunctory release through the Weinstein-controlled Dimension Films in late 2006.
