rangers.co.uk/news/headlines/item/5216-hutton-set-to-return KYLE HUTTON will return to the Rangers squad for Sunday’s trip to Ayr United as he looks to make his first competitive appearance of the season. The midfielder has been out for two and a half months after sustaining ankle ligament damage during the club’s pre-season training camp in Germany. That injury happened after the 22-year-old had impressed in games against Brora Rangers, Elgin City, Bristol City and FC Gutersloh. Hutton has made good progress in recent weeks and played the first 45 minutes of the under-20 side’s 2-0 SPFL League defeat to Aberdeen at Dumbarton last month. He was also involved in a 5-1 closed-doors bounce game victory against a Partick Thistle XI at Murray Park. Now Hutton is ready to return to action, although manager Ally McCoist admits the Auchenhowie youth product needs minutes and it’s more likely he’ll be on the bench. Richard Foster is a doubt for the trip to Somerset Park as he has an Achilles problem and he’ll be assessed over the next 48 hours. If he doesn’t make it, that could allow for a return to the side for Kyle McAusland, who spent much of last term on loan at the Honest Men. McAusland hasn’t played for the team since to 5-0 win over East Fife at Ibrox on August 31, a match in which many fans felt he’d had his best game for the club yet. There are plenty of other options to fill in at right-back if Foster fails to recover on time, with that position one of the most hotly-contested in the team. Elsewhere, Ross Perry and Chris Hegarty remain out as they recover from their own ankle injuries, each of which required minor operations. Both men are going through rehabilitation programmes and are closing in on comebacks as well but they are still slightly behind Hutton at this stage. Rangers will be backed by around 7,000 travelling fans against Mark Roberts’ side this weekend as they make their first trip to Ayr in more than a decade. The last meeting of the sides was a Scottish Cup tie in February 2003, which the Light Blues won 1-0 courtesy of a late Ronald de Boer goal. Gers last took on United in a league match in the 1977/78 campaign and have won their last nine meetings with the Honest Men.
