redeyemaniac asked: I love the combination of pixel art and 3d - TopicsExpress

redeyemaniac asked: I love the combination of pixel art and 3d environment, I may have to save that in the old "game vault" for future projects (LIKE WHEN I CAN GET UNITY FOR FREE!) We Replied: Thank you! Believe me, it’s not something we just immediately came up with. It’s what happened when we just decided to stop waiting for Unity to update to the new version with the ability to make purely 2D games (which still isn’t out yet). We were just tinkering around a little and got to the point where it was like “well this looks way cooler than 2D alone.” Then we kind of dove in full-force on the hybrid look and developed it. The ethos we’re going with is attempting to make it feel like if technology developed beyond SNES but developers like… didn’t get the idea of a fully 3D game. Kind of like Clockwork Knight but with less primitive tech and a more primitive goal. In a way, the art style symbolizes the mentality of the type of people Tagg and Aubrey are. Technology has gotten better and the scope of what someone can do in a recording has gotten so much more wide, yet they want retro-style bands and they want to buy on vinyl. I won’t say that is how I prefer my music, but this art style is how I would make a platform game (because clearly that’s what we’re doing). So while I could sit here and criticize people who won’t listen to EDM they buy digitally, I’m doing the same thing with video games. In that way, we are poking a bit of fun at hipsters, but I think the overall goal isn’t to rip them a new one - because we retro game fans are doing the same thing. They can live as they want (at least the ones not being elitist). Bet you didn’t expect a simple comment about our visual style to turn into a post about our game’s philosophy. Still, thank you. It’s really great to know people appreciate what we’re trying to do. -Peter
