saw Two Boys at the Metropolitan Opera last night. Yes, it was - TopicsExpress

saw Two Boys at the Metropolitan Opera last night. Yes, it was nice to see Buck and Christopher but, actually, I was referring to the title of the opera. Its VERY rare for me to go to the opera and have no clue as to what Im about to see and hear. Its an experience I cherish. Usually, I know the music and exactly whats going to happen. Its just a matter of how are they going to do it this time. Dont get me wrong, I really love it. But last night was special. Prior to the performance, I had actively avoided any information about or music from the opera. It was so refreshing to have a what I consider a true theatrical experience - letting the story and music unfold before me and allowing myself to become totally engaged. I wasnt at all disappointed. The music was lovely and completely appropriate. The entire execution - stage direction, choreography, performance, visual aspects - was at a very high level. Ill admit, though, that I figured out the story very early on - around the second entrance of the sister, Rebecca. I also have some big questions, especially regarding a major motivation. Thats as much as Ill say as I dont want to spoil it for anyone. In any case, it was a very satisfying night in the theater! Tonight, back to the Met for Brittens Midsummer Nights Dream, only my fourth opera in five days.
