several people in my inbox have asked me to give my thoughts on the radio and tv awards which i did not attend because of an extraordinary meeting that came an hour before i was due to depart.first the awards are fundamentally good for the industry.every field of public life should have rewards for achievement.i am sure the organizers have this as the noble intention.that said, the idea of the public voting is partially good but can be subject to manipulation by campaigns which i actually saw take place on facebook.it can also have repeat voting (its not one man one vote in there) so if i spend 2M on funding smss i can win an award which becomes a historical fact.a silent monitoring system by research (even done by synovate on behalf of rtv) can do better or both can run side by side.so that the results of sms are made known and the result by research are made known and separate awards given for those.further i think as follows:1.that the awards should not have gold and silver (it dilutes the category and the award).there should be only one winner.victory is sweeter that way 2.the partitions of local and english should be dissolved because all media that broadcasts from here is local.but there are formats and programming categories which we recognize in broadcasting here that could form the categories so that they do not become abstract e.g. best news station, best sports station, etc (which we actually use when carrying out audience and viewer surveys and which the industry and its practitioners will understand more).programmes also have their categories.3.the awards should have the names of the winners engraved on the plaques.it is hard for wamala balunaba to tell his grand children that he won that award if his name was not engraved on it. 4.the personalities must be researched to determine whether they are new, veterans or etc so that we do not accidentally find lucky who i have listened to on air for at least 11 years does not feature in rising. 5.faces of radio and tv i think is not an appropriate award.most popular could serve better.a face means representation by appointment not by award.if we say most popular male tv presenter, most popular female tv presenter i think would be better...all this said i congratulate the winners and the organizers.the awards as an event are growing exponentially in perception, reception and organization.
