so i met the cutest girl tonight. was at Film Society of Lincoln Center watching robert minervinis The Passage as part of New York Film Festival, and i was getting serious motion sickness before the first half an hour because of the indie handheld camstyle. decided to step out for a breather before i barfed, and as i passed through i heard a kids voice coming from one of the empty auditoriums. step in and theres arden. mic in hand, wide-eyed, blonde hair. so i ask her what shes doing and she says shes practising/improvising a duet that she and her best friend will to perform at a gingerbread party (a gingerbread party is where you tear up gingerbread men and eat them up and get fat). she asks me what im doing and i tell her i was going to get sick during the film. she says her dad is the lincoln center film projectionist, projecting The Passage right now. cool, so you get to hang out in this room? yeah, sometimes i screen buffy the vampire slayer here and have playdates with my friends. oh wow can i come next time? sure. if youre not, like, a stalker or anything. then tweenpop blasts through the speakers and arden and i look at each other and then we just start dancing madly. her dad is putting on tunes on the audio system for us. arden and we dance through tune after tune and arden and i die when michael jacksons smooth criminal goes on. we go from dancing with serious faces to shaking and laughing to shouting into the working mic together, ANNIE ARE YOU OKAY! WILL YOU TELL US! THAT YOURE OKAY! arden says: look, were perspiring. i say: i know right, and i take off my sweater. we dance and dance and dance and sing and sing and sing and ask each other questions about each other and the next thing we know the film is over and Kirsten Tan comes in and shoots a slomo vid of us dancing to a distorted versh of taylor swifts shake it off. i mean please look at ardens hair. i mean have you ever have you ever danced, i mean REALLY REALLY danced, with an eight year old girl? and its only the two of you in the whole wide world and youre not trying to impress anyone or act like anything and its just you and her and the moment? ardens going to invite me to her birthday party in november. its a circus theme (i say okay arden i know we just met me so you wont know its true but i really actually am mad about the circus. im going to dress up when i come okay.) i give her my address which i have as a print out and because i dont have a pen on me i use my black lipstick to cancel out a part thats wrong and arden, all of eight years old, gives me a look and says, you are a crazy kooky girl.
