If there’s a positive thing to take from this game is the experience itself; we can now confirm something we’ve known all along: that it won’t be easy to beat Brazil in Brazil. But in a year from now, we’ll be back and we’ll try to defend what is ours. At times, we had a lot of issues regarding out counter attacks, we weren’t able to adapt to what the situation demanded of us and we let it get the best of ourselves. We had no idea if we were supposed to attack, to defend… there was a lot of uncertainty. We suffered too much, we missed a penalty, we were left with ten men… it was one of those days where things start to go wrong from the very beginning. People often think that Spain must reach every final and win every tournament, but that is not the way it works. What we’ve been doing in the past few years has been incredibly difficult, and it is impossible to always win. Tonight we had a misstep against a rival who was vastly superior, but it changes nothing about the way we’ll face the future. For the time being, we can only congratulate Brazil. They were better than us, superior in every way, and won the game fairly. I started off on the bench, and then progressively I was given more minutes of playing time and scored some goals, but it didn’t mean much in the end. I do cherish the Golden Boot, but it is an award you can only truly enjoy if you win. In my case, that didn’t happen, so it feels meaningless. A year from now, we’ll return, and while I think that the squad will be similar to the one we have now, the U-21 players are coming strong and most of the U-23 ones are starters at top european teams. If you add that to the fact that the experience we just lived is an important one, one that we’ll surely learn from, we can be optimistic. That’s why football is such a beautiful thing, it always gives you another chance.
