the trial of edgar allan poe often is said the poetic dead lay stiffened inside their tombs. while the living move on singing mourning songs as the sun once again trades the moon... still the trial of edgar the poet, the man who would call himself king. was a sinister fair, and so full of despair, that i thought you might all learn a thing. the courtroom was filling up quickly with characters quite well-defined. as a story once said, no one gives up the dead, like a ghost who has gone past his prime. as the judges took seats and were flattered, by the lawyers who knew all too well -that the law here in hell does not matter- it is only for show and for swell. as the evidence mounted and mounted, oh the lines they did use were quite good. twas as if poor old edgar was shattered as he rocked back and forth where he stood. when the jury was motioned to quorum and they shuffled their bones cross the floor- one by one looking over at edgar- all pretending that they knew the score. it was only a matter of minutes, when the jurors were brought back inside, all of them took their places quite smugly as the judges and lawyers all sighed: let us now get this over and done with! was the cry heard from both low and high. for we all know that edgar is done with, serve him his slice of cooked raven pie! how dare he assume to know matters of the spirits and trials of men. as the judges were handed the verdict edgar reached out and flickered his pen... ah, at last i am home with my offspring, for i knew all along i was right. for in hell all men still seek attention they could never achieve in the light. and as edgar moved pen all around him, one by one all his ghosts disappeared. and the visions of darkness that bound him fell away like the dust of the years... so if ever you’re reading a poem that seems offish and gives you a fright. just remember that edgar is laughing in his tomb just beneath you tonight!!! © Stephen John Wade 7/14/09 from the bewitched series of poems
