C6-SocialMedia-Tweet-Wendy A Cook The Republicans and the outside groups used some anonymous Twitter accounts to share internal polling data ahead of the midterm elections, but CNN has learned, about the practice that raises questions about whether they violated campaign finance laws that will prohibit coordination. They had hidden the Twitter accounts in plain sight. All of the profiles were publicly available but meaningless without any knowledge of how to find them and decode the important information, according to a source with knowledge of the activities. Practice is the latest effort of the quest by the political operatives to exploit the murky world of campaign finance laws when limits of spending in politics are eroding and regulators are being defanged. The groups that are behind the operation had a good sense of humor about what they are trying to do. The Twitter account was named after Bruno Gianelli, who is fictional character in The West Wing who pressed his colleagues to use ethically questionable “soft money” to fund the campaigns. The typical tweet will read as following: “CA-40/43-44/49-44/44-50/36-44/49-10/16/14-52/476-10s.” The source said that the post would look like gibberish to most of the people that represent polling data for the various Housing races. The information that is posting on Twitter is technically public, it could provide a convenient loophole to the law or it could run afoul of it. Paul S Ryan the senior counsel at Campaign Legal Center said it is really a cutting edge that a nonpartisan organization focused on campaign finance issues. “It might be legal.
