this is a link to a new yorker piece overwhelming force, what happened in the last days of the gulf war? by seymour hersh published in 2000 about the controversy surrounding the infamous major general mccaffrey...he was our division commander during the first gulf war...i was in the 197th infantry brigade out of fort benning, GA, we were attached to and deployed with and redesignated as the 3rd brigade of the 24th infantry division...the controversy primarily involved mccaffrey and the 1st brigade (from just before to during to just after the cease fire)...we were lucky to have not gotten sucked into that mess war is about making and covering up messes at every level in every context...individual soldiers do it and squads and companies and battalions and brigades and divisions and corps and armies all do it...that is what civilians do not understand.
