this morning, i received a letter from a friend. it is five full pages, single spaced. i need to transcribe some of it, but there’s no way i’m writing it all. this is for me… “i have seen a broad spectrum of creative and productive people in my life. i can tell you with complete certainty that you have the raw materials to master any endeavor with greater success than any of them, including myself. your brain is exploding with raw materials: focus, detailed observation, critical analysis, phenomenal problem solving, and speed. you are one of the smartest people i have ever met; you have a knack for being hands-on and you’re not afraid to get dirty. you are bright- extremely intelligent. you absorb, process and retain information at a higher rate than most people and thus you are a fast learner.” “i have never met another individual with so much brain power as you, Sam Hyde. i’ve met plenty of smart people as well as many talented people but really they are all just good at practicing. there is something that transcends smarts, talent and all the practice in the world; and that is inception and innovation- the root of creativity.” “you have all these symptoms of chronic emotional pain and i see it seep out in quirky ways: face picking, subtle and heavy mood swings, unexplainably-happy incessant whistling, impulsive decisions, frequent changes in your appearance… sensitivity, a dark sense of humor and the obvious (i can see it in your eyes). i’ve also seen you be impressively creative, brilliant and tasteful. the style of your bicycle, the way you dress forms, the notes in the book [the four agreements] you left at my house, the speed at which you read, the great care that you put into your [hobbies] and the profound phrases you mutter out during a panic attack. these are all small indicators of something tremendous. you are the perfect storm in the making because you posses so many creative tools. one of the most important being fire- i feel like i’m watching a flame-thrower trying to work for a fire department.” “you are taking a nap at the base of a giant and beautiful mountain that not many people on this earth are equipped to climb, but you are well equipped.”
