tl;dr version of student shared governance in the UW-System: *Students in the UW-System have statutory rights guaranteed under WI Stat. §36.09(5) and subsequent case law. *Those rights include the right to organize and pick their representatives as the students see fit, and the right to set and allocate student dollars (segregated fees, upwards of $25 MILLION in 2013-2014 at UWM). *University Policy cannot be enacted without the approval of students (Spoto v. Board of Regents) - though not all Universities are in compliance (including UWM) *Elected students in shared governance are publicly elected officials within the Executive Branch of WI State government. Why You Should Care: *YOU have a VOICE in what happens at your University! $1200 (current seg fees at UWM for 2013-2014) is ALOT of money YOU’RE paying as a student in addition to tuition. *This money funds useful things like Be On the Safe Side (B.O.S.S.), athletics (and sports clubs), student organizations, the Child Care Center, UPASS, and the list goes on… *Being involved in shared governance means working hand in hand with faculty, academic staff, classified staff, and even the Chancellor. *Getting involved means you get to work together and enact the change you envision to move your campus community forward. - See more at: asap4uwm/sharedgovernance
