wallacecollection.org/blog/2014/05/armourgeddon/ This delightful article chronicles the massive undertaking of photographing all the European arms and armour in The Wallace Collection. Some of the photographs of the photography taking place will give you views of objects that you havent seen before. It all culminated, of course, in Toby Capwells magnificent book Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection, which also became available as a ground-breaking digital catalogue. The photography is beautiful and the text is clear and authoritative. I had already moved to the US, when this project began but I have been fortunate that tv projects have ensured that I make return visits to the UK several times a year. Throughout this period, going to the Wallace was an immediate priority on arrival (to be honest - it still is). However during the photography project there were closed galleries choc a bloc with objects, which allowed unprecedented access to examine on a large scale. Toby had always found new, interesting nuggets about several objects and was always keen to share these gems with me. Seeing the objects from every angle and out of the context of their crowded display cases was pure delight.
