when i work in the garden or by the raspberry patch i am almost never alone. my chickens usually find me there in quick order. the cats, watson, mary or olivia will come down for a bit and rub against me for attention or curl up in the grass nearby for a while. little birds perch nearby and chirp at me before jumping down to freshly disturbed soil to check for tidbits. some times i will hear a deer snort in the woods nearby. tonight was no exception as i worked on cleaning the old garden part where the raspberry patch now is. my chickens gathered around me, busily working the soil and snatching up whatever they considered edible. until dusk drew nigh...then they started making worried little noises and lifting their heads to peer around suspiciously. then they were gone. headed for the coop. actually what they did was hang near the coop until i got back up there. the routine is for me to fill their food dish and check their water. then i set down on the feed box and wait. within a few minutes they will come rushing over to hurry up the ramp and tackle their bedtime snack. i close the pen against any predators and they gradually filter back to the roost and settle down for the night. i take my egg inside [only the old hen is laying at this time] and settle into my own evening routine.
