wow...amazing read... Nicolas is non verbal and even though i think i understand him better than anyone...i rely a lot on his behaviors and expressions to figure out what makes him happy, what he dislikes, etc. I have always struggled with being told to discourage his clapping. It is considered stimming behavior that serves no functional purpose. I finally came to the conclusion a long time ago that it isnt a non functional behavior, not for him. It is how he interacts and connects with other people. It is something he does that gives him a great sense of joy. How can that be wrong? Yeah, it can be annoying at times, but in his world, there are very few things he really enjoys doing. Just because it isnt considered the norm for most people thats ok, he isnt like most people...he has his own way of doing things. I can live with that...thankfully, those that know him can too. :) (I also realized, he is not the only one who stims if you think about it, we all do, some doodle while talking on the phone, some people play with their hair, some tap their feet without even knowing it...i think its just a way to release energy, bring focus when your mind is running amuck. For an autistic child, their minds are processing way more than a typical person does...makes sense that they would need a way to process some of that energy)
