... yesterday morning i was in no particular rush to get to the marsh - i dawdled about on the 2+ mile walk down there, looking at my favorite trees in the neighborhood, and stooping to pet the kitty cats along the way when i got there, the first bird i noticed was a great blue heron out on an island in one of the ponds - it was a nice-sky morning, so i decided to just stay there until the bird got bored enough to fly to another place to hang out, because i enjoy recording that special moment of take off ten minutes went by, and it was still just preening and looking around from time to time - i said to myself, well i am in no hurry, i think i can be as patient as a heron :-) - twenty minutes in - by now i am sitting crossed legged in the grass and i noticed the heron also moving into some kinda quasi-yoga pose - hmmmm, this may take a while so there we were, both just contentedly taking in the late august sun, when out of nowhere, this turkey vulture begins a series of swoops, clearly intending to intimidate the heron into flying off - now i have seen a lot of vultures, and i have seen a lot of herons, but i have never seen an interaction like this - my initial, egotistical thought of outlasting the patience of the heron dwindled into nothingness once i witnessed the fearlessness of this magnificent creature - several times, the vulture dropped in right overhead of the heron - talk about a total buzz-kill - one moment you are hanging out in the sun, eyes half closed, listening to the breeze across the water, and the next moment a huge, aggressive individual intentionally invades your personal space with an almost six foot wingspan on the vulture, i can see why the egrets feathers got a little ruffled - but it held its ground, and went right back into its blissful sunbathing, albeit with one eye turned towards the sky - i, on the other hand, had reached the end of my patience and drifted southward on to new sights, and sounds, and smells
