I greatly appreciate your taking the time to contact me on this important issue. As you are aware, this legislation was introduced to the House on September 30th, 2013 by Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO). The legislation establishes the North American bison as the national mammal of the United States. As it currently stands, the bill is under further review in the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The North American bison is an animal which has a special place in the hearts of millions of Americans. Once a source of food, clothing, and shelter, the North American bison now shows its importance through its place in natural habitats. The fact that this American icon was almost lost from the world forever is an ecological travesty that was fortunately avoided. The North American bison population has surged from precarious numbers over 100 years ago to herds large enough to revoke even their threatened status. I believe that the North American bison will continue to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of Americans as its likeness is imposed upon countless items of American business and antiquity. Although I do not sit on the committee that is currently debating the issue, I will be sure to keep an eye open for the legislation should it find its way to the House floor. The facts presented in favor of the North American bison are intriguing and influential and I will be sure to keep them in mind. Again, thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3400.
