জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের হল নিয়ে NEW AGE এর প্রতিবেদন............ JnU fails to recover dormitories Firoz Rashid probe committee gave no report October 20, 2014 Mohiuddin Alamgir and Emrul Hasan Bappi Jagannath University celebrates ninth founding anniversary today making virtually no headway in recovering 10 out of 12 of its dormitories from illegal occupants. In the 1970s the dormitories provided accommodation to the resident students of the then Jagannath College. The students were evicted from the hostels following clashes between them and the hooligans during the movement against military ruler Ershad in February 1985. The hooligans rampaged and torched the student dormitories. Grabbing the hostels by powerful elements began later in the same year. In 2005, Jagannath College was turned into a university. With the dormitories under illegal occupation, a vigorous month long movement by 20,000 students of the university forced the government to appoint a seven-member committee on March 3 and asked to submit a probe report in 30 working days. Since then, the university could recover only a part of Nazrul Islam dormitory and sent a couple of letters to the land ministry and the deputy commissioner of Dhaka to get three of the dormitories vacated from illegal occupants. The University authorities just forgot to take any initiative to recover five other dormitories. On April 24, the probe committee headed Jatiya Party MP and former Jagannath College student Kazi Firoz Rashid missed the deadline to submit its report. Probe committee member secretary Wahiduzzaman told New Age that the report would be submitted soon. Vice-chancellor Mijanur Rahman said that he was trying his best to recover the dormitories having limited or least legal problems. The recovery would take longer for the dormitories having more legal complications, said Mijan. The Jagannath University authorities simply took no initiates to recover Tibbet Hostel, Saidur Rahman Hostel, Rouf Majumder Hostel, Shahid Anwar Shafik Hostel and Shahabuddin Hostel. The Tibbet Hostel at Kumartuli has been grabbed several individuals, including Haji Muhamad Selim, MP from Lalbagh and Kotwali. Haji Selim built a market on the hostel land and named it Ghulshan Market after his wife Gulshan Ara. Haji Selim claimed that he owns the place and said if the students and the authorities could produce any document to show that it belongs to the university, he would simply vacate it. Shahid Anwar Shafik Hostel at Armanitola has been turned into a warehouse-cum-commercial building. Saidur Rahman Hostel has been turned into a rickshaw garage and Abdur Rouf Majumder Hostel into a warehouse. Local Awami League leader Aminul Haque Biplob grabbed Shahabuddin Hostel, said university officials. A staff quarter, called Karmachari Abash, once used as students’ hostel, has been turned into Crown Market. Jagannath University authorities said that they requested Dhaka South City Corporation to hand over the school it had established on the premises of what was once Bazlur Rahman Hostel. The university authorities sent several letters to the land ministry to get Abdur Rahman Hostel, housing police families, vacated. The police families said that they took the hostel land on lease. The university authorities said that they also wrote to the deputy commissioner of Dhaka to cancel the lease of Shaheed Ajmal Hossain Hostel. Student demonstrations in 2012 forced the university authorities to recover Habibur Rahman Hostel and Bani Bhaban. Former teachers and students said that in the 1970s Jagannth College had at least 12 hostels. The college was founded in 1884. Vice chancellor Mijan said on Monday construction of an 800-seat hall for girls would start. The university finalized the preparations to buy 3.5 acres of land at Keraniganj to build student dormitories, he said. He said that the matter of acquiring seven acres of land at Keraniganj awaits approval from the prime minister, he said. - See more at: newagebd.net/59204/jnu-fails-to-recover-dormitories/
