06.26.13_ Daily Devotion: “The Days of Our Years Are…” Psalm 90:10 “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” By Dr. M.H. Salahshurian, Ph. D Moses lived to be one hundred twenty years of age and, no doubt, this 90th Psalm is written by him. Because of man’s gross sin, Moses knew that after the flood, God reduced man’s average life span to 70 years as written in Psalm 90:10a, “…threescore years and ten”; (70 years). Also by inspiration and by experience he knew, if for any reason God allows man to go over seventy years of age, in those extra years (over 70), one needs to expect “labour” and “Sorrow”; Psalm 90:10b. Previously in Psalm 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” In this verse, Psalm 90:2, Moses makes a great contrast between God’s existence and His longevity and man’s age limit! In Ps. 90:2b, “…even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” Here, the connotation is that God has always existed from everlasting to everlasting; from beginninglessness to the endlessness of time. Although man’s age is limited (70 years), yet God is self-existing from everlasting to everlasting, but man was given a blessed hope in Ecclesiastes 3:11. “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.” Solomon, by God’s inspiration, gave man this great hope in Eccl. 3:11. The word “world” in this verse in Hebrew means: Eternity, Endlessness. Solomon was alluding to the fact that since God made man in His own image (Genesis 1:27), God purposely put in man’s heart the desire for endlessness eternity or wanting to go back to his maker after the age of seventy! For those of you who are pushing 60 or 70, don’t be surprised if you are feeling more and more aches and pains, if your life has become more laborious and sorrowful, you feel life no longer has much to offer and even the food you used to love no longer interests you. You need to read Psalm 90:10b., over again! We are indeed made with this longing in our very hearts, to want to go back and be with our maker for eternity. 2 Timothy 4:7, “ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Hebrews 12:3-4, “For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. YE HAVE NOT YET RESISTED UNTO BLOOD, STRIVING AGAINST SIN.” theswordandshield
