100 Makers / 100 Days Were continuing our 100 day series featuring participants in the ongoing exhibition NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial with Mark Dion’s ‘Equipment–Clark Expedition.’ Dixons work recreates in papier mâché the material culture of the famed explorer Robert Sterling Clark’s extensive expedition through the Shen-kan region of North China from 1908 to 1909. This was a massive undertaking, involving teams of pack animals, a large exploratory team and a support staff of sixty people. However, very little material from this vast endeavor remains today. The works on view represent a cache of exploration materials created by Dion and first displayed temporarily at the Explorers Club in New York. These works reproduced as surrogates or specters of their originals pay homage to the tools of inquiry that were not deemed worthy of collection and preservation.
