11) Tom Waits-Come On Up To The House With Tom Waits, it is possible to choose so many different styles and permutations, but there is something special about 1999’s Mule Variations, and this track in particular, which made it stand out for selection today. Celebratory, rousing and hopeful, Come On Up To The House is a comforting gesture in a harsh world. The line ‘Doesn’t life seem nasty, brutish and short?’ is taken from the 1651 book Leviathan, which is a great example of just how rich and detailed Wait’s references may be, whilst still working within the construct of the track in question. This one gets me every time. Mule Variations is an absolute classic and even after fifteen years, I can’t listen to it without getting emotional.
