12/09/14 (0934) ROLE OF CHRISTIANS IN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS For Christians one undoubtedly excellent form of international activity is the part they play, either individually or collectively, in organizations set up or on the way to being set up to foster cooperation between nations. Different Catholic international bodies can assist the community of nations on the way to peace and brotherhood; these bodies should be strengthened by enlarging the number of their well-trained members, by increasing the subsidies they need so badly, and by suitable coordination of their forces. Nowadays efficiency of action and the need for dialogue call for concerted effort. Organizations of this kind, moreover, contribute more than a little to the instilling of a feeling of universality, which is certainly appropriate for Catholics, and to the formation of truly worldwide solidarity and responsibility. Finally, it is to be hoped that, in order to fulfil their role in the international community properly, Catholics will seek to cooperate actively and positively with our separated brethern, who profess the charity of the Gospel along with us, and also with all men thirsting for true peace. Taking into account the immensity of the hardships which still afflict a large section of humanity, and with a view to fostering everywhere the justice and love of Christ for the poor, the Council suggest that it would be most opportune to create some organization of the universal Church whose task it would be to to arouse the Catholic community to promote the progress of areas which are in want and foster social justice between nations.
