20. TOTENTANZ— My prince hath killed us— I hold his breath; he’s gone and, thus, I wring from death my every plume of strength and will lest, through vascular flume, our love should be spilt like mordant wine –as red as shame– all o’er the vine of guilt and blame. I knew he loved me more than I could, but he must see that I always would: if only I had had a day— one more day, I would’ve knelt to pray for his liberation from my mortal season wherein, like damnation, lay his fatal prison. O how I wept, bemoaned his woe; had I not left him to my rue mayhap we now— we’d be alive, together to avow this lust for life... My prince hath killed us— I dance with death; he’s gone and, thus, I hold his breath.
