2013 SOT Profiles of Awardees ELEMENTARY COMPETITION 1. FELY A. BATILOY Special Education-Integrated School for Exceptional Children (SPED-ISEC) Gen. Luna St., Iloilo City Current Position: Master Teacher I Field of Specialization: Music No. of Years Teaching: 19 years 12th awardee from Iloilo City More than a music teacher, Mrs. Batiloy or Inday Fely, among her students and colleagues, is a music scholar, a poet, and a cultural researcher-educator. Her outstanding contributions to education includes production, arrangement and singing of songs in two CD albums entitled Lanton Sang Gugma I and II (Songs of Love), which are compilations of less known Ilonggo and Visayan kundiman and folk songs. Together with a book called “Less-Known Ilonggo Folksongs Book I” which she compiled, transcribed and arranged, these materials are used as reference in the Mother Tongue-Based Curriculum of DepEd’s K12, and the 2009-2011 SPED MIS Curriculum in Iloilo and the entire Visayan Region. Unleashing her gift in creative writing and her desire to inspire others from her life experiences, she also wrote and published “Whispers of the Heart”, a compilation of 83 poems about love and life, some of which were actually children’s songs, prayer songs that she used in her classes, farewell songs, alma mater songs, tongue twisters and personal quotations. In line with her advocacy to promote cultural heritage and arts that mainly include local folksongs; she conducted a culture-based action research about integrating Ilonggo folk songs into the curriculum for Grade V MIS pupils for the enrichment of students’ national cultural knowledge and competencies. True to her Ilonggo roots, she composed and sang the song, “Daku Nga Dios” (Great God), accompanied by the students “Tunog Pagdayaw Group” of SPED- ISEC with various ethnic musical instruments. This song is being performed in different special occasions such as DepEd’s socio-cultural activities, festivals and in different church activities in Iloilo city and within the Visayas area. Her superb teaching skills are mainly defined by her service as a choir trainer, conductress and vocal coach to SPED-ISEC Children’s Choir. Under her supervision, the children’s choir has participated in national competitions and won as well in regional competitions across the country. Because of her outstanding reputation in the field of music education, she is often invited as a judge in various musical competitions and as a performer in different ethnic and cultural occasions. Being an active community leader, she also serves her church as a Sunday school teacher and a youth ministry music coordinator. She also leads public service activities of SPED-ISEC Children’s Choir and its Parents Association, instilling to the minds of her students and their parents the value of generosity and nationalism.
