24 Years ago at this moment... I was shuffling around the house, - TopicsExpress

24 Years ago at this moment... I was shuffling around the house, two weeks overdue. All was quiet, including my belly. My husband went off to work, about 20 miles away, in his ancient car, an AMC model that I cannot even remember now, inherited from his Memere and Pepere. I was still nesting, because- tomorrow- was the arrival date of our baby...at 7AM on 1/9/91, I would be induced. Excited over that date because the abbreviation was the same as the year. Happily and slowly, I made my way through the day. At 3:30, a friend was coming over for tea. At 3pm, without warning came 5min contractions and bleeding. ~panicked loud call to my husband, who made that old car chug as fast as he could- he told me he was thinking I would not be there when he made it home... ~um...hello...doctor? this is not how the classes said it would go!? (actually it was hard to understand me because of the frightened sobs and fast contractions) are you alone? the nurse asked Thankfully my tea-date arrived in the next few minutes. She had a small child and calmed me down, reminded me to breathe. Mo FINALLY got home, poured me into the sensible station wagon (a Honda Prelude was parked there before) I scolded him every time he stopped for an intersection as we made our way through the city streets. Checked at hospital, I was at (only) 2cm, where I had been for over a month. It was like a sit-com, I grabbed the nurse by her shirt and loudly said, you are NOT sending me home this time! (long story short...two earlier false alarms). She assured me that this baby was on its way. I was immersed into a utilitarian metal (lukewarm) hot tub. I hunkered down, and got a grip. The bleeding was because capillaries were breaking and not unexpected in a redhead. Mo quietly read a magazine for the next hour, I did not talk or cry anymore. I dont think he ever had to really step up to coaching mode. When I got out of the tub an hour later, I asked for an epidural to help with the pain but was informed that I was past the point of qualifying for it- I had gone from 2 to 8cm in one hour - now in transition. I laid on my side and focused on the blue lights of the monitor. I did not speak much...I was working. My mom arrived. (All was right with the world now) She went out to the nurses desk...my daughter is making these really low growling sounds...is she okay? (back in the early 60s, my mom was sedated through her deliveries) NO!! Dont let her push!! Was the loud reply, as she went into action. Doctor located...Given permission to push...15 minutes later and 9.2lb dark haired girlchild shot out of me. Nana got to hold her first (my husband teases her about this). Annie arrived at 10pm..just 7 hours after that first contraction. Happy Birthday to my amazing child. You will always be my little girl. I cant believe its been 24 years.
