4 November 1307-The Swiss Confederation declares itself independent of Austria. 1576-Eighty Years War; Spain conquers Antwerp in the rebellious Spanish Netherlands; commence great three day destruction of the city. 1854-Florence Nightingale arrives in Crimea. 1918-Wilfred Owen, British poet and author of the powerful anti-war poem Dulce est Decorum Est is killed on the Western Front. 1921-Hitler forms the SA, forerunner to the SS. 1922-Howard Carter finds the first signs of King Tuts tomb. 1942-General Montgomery leads the 8th Army in the defeat of Field Marshal Rommels Afrika Korps at El Alamein; Field Marshal Rommel disobeys a direct order from Hitler and retreats from battle in an effort to save his forces. 1952-President Truman creates the National Security Agency by secret executive order. 1956-Hungarian rebellion; 17 Soviet divisions move into Hungary to crush the rebellion and Nagys government; aircraft and armor are used to destroy buildings housing Hungarian rebels; Nagy appeals to the world via radio for assistance; Soviet armor fires on the foundations of houses so that they collapse and trap rebels inside. 1979-US Embassy in Tehran is seized by radical Islamic students; commence great hostage crisis. 1995-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin is assassinated by a religious fanatic.
