53% of Oklahomas prison population is non-violent drug related offenses (according to ODOCs own website). Each inmate costs the taxpayer a min of 15,330$ per year. Oklahoma incarcerates a higher proportion of persons for drug offenses than all other states, 27% of the prison population, compared to 20% nationally (Oklahoma legal group). In 2010, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections had $441.8 million in prison expenditures.... to put this in perspective, Oklahoma spends approximately $235 million per year for locking up people for weed. If the state wants to fix its budget shortfall, maybe we should stopping locking non-violent people up, and make medical legal.
