HAWKESBURY POLICE WOULD LIKE TO ISSUE A WARNING IN REGARDS TO TRAVELLING CONMEN IN WESTERN SYDNEY. NSW Fair Trading have today issued a warning to residents and businesses in Western Sydney. It is reported a male is approaching people with recently painted roofs and telling them he has been sent back to fix problems that have been identified. The man is described as middle aged with long hair, about 58 tall with a pale complexion and a very strong Irish or English accent. It is reported the man drives an old car and is in the company of a second man. The men allegedly do very little work, charge high prices and are aggressive in their demands for payment. People offering or carrying out work valued at more than $1,000 (labour and materials) on residential properties in NSW are required to be licensed. Consumers should ask to see the license, which is similar to a credit card with the details of the traders name and licence category. The Australian Consumer Law prohibits contractors from intimidating or threatening consumers for payment. If consumers feel threatened they should call NSW Police immediately. Anyone with information should report to the national travelling conmen hotline on 1300 133 408. Fair trading recommends consumers contract local, licensed trades people. You can check licenses online at fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call 133 220.
