600,000 people did not pay the TV Licence in Ireland last year. Well done! But only 16,566 of those people were taken to court. Fine Gael TD Patrick O’Donovan said the practice was of no benefit to anyone including the taxpayer, the State or the courts. He said: “It is a complete waste of court time, it is a complete waste of resources. The €160 will pale into insignificance by the time the court costs are wound up.” Wow. Someone in the government actually talking sense for once. But just when you thought there was hope for this government, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said she could not reveal the number of people prosecuted or jailed for not paying. Why cant she reveal the figures???? RTE is state owned, meaning it belongs to every taxpayer in the country. Are we not entitled to know what these figures are? Its not like anyone is asking for the names and addresss of these people. I can only assume that the reason she wont reveal the figures is because there must have been an extremely low percentage of successful prosecutions....
