9// Memorial Service - Washington Fire and Rescue Prayer of Intercession: God of justice and mercy, We echo the words of the ancient prophet, Jeremiah, who watched as his beloved city and people suffered its own Ground Zero, “My soul still remembers and sinks within me. There’s one other thing I remember, and remembering, I keep a grip on hope … Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Great are You LORD for You make all things new. You are the God of eternal hope. Our nation could have readily been consumed by sorrow, by bitterness, by reckless revenge. Yet, compassion prevailed. Mercy persisted. Love overcame. Heroism and hope held us steady. In the midst of heartache like we have never known, the spirit of courage, resiliency, justice and mercy rose from the ashes of despair. We witnessed with our own eyes, the reality that Love holds the final word. With one voice, We pray for all whose lives were lost that tragic day. May their souls rest in peace. Help their loved ones who bear the loss most keenly to find hope and meaning for lives lived today. Assure them the lives of their loved ones were not lost in vain. We pray for those who bear the emotional, physical, and spiritual scars of 9/11. We ask that you would quiet their troubled thoughts, soothe their wounds, and revive hope for their spirits. We pray for the brave who ran into burning buildings, dug day after day through rubble, cared for the broken, and who daily carried home with them the dust of sorrow upon sorrow. Bless them for their selfless service. We thank you for our fire fighters, EMTs, law enforcement, and troops who serve us today, committing hours to protecting and preserving life and property. Daily, they choose to place their own lives at risk for another. Strengthen them. Protect them. Equip them: body mind and spirit. May we all be stirred to live lives anchored in Hope, inspired by Love, and guided by Compassion for our fellow human beings created in Your holy image. This 9.11 we remember. In You, our Sure Foundation, we pray. Amen.
