99 PROBLEMS BUT A SLOPPY SALUTE AINT ONE OMG! The fate of the United States of America is sealed and our nation has been brought to its knees by an attack from within. At least thats what you might think has happened with the inescapable scandal du jour from the right wing instant outrage machine. And what is this outrage? It seems that the president saluted some Marines with a cup of coffee in his hand. Right wing media have had a field day with what they call the Latte Salute. We have serious issues to deal with as a country but our right wing chooses instead to manufacture yet another non-issue for their TV shows, blogs and what I call the social media share everything critical of Obama without ever once considering the veracity of it crowd. So, predictably, the internet gets set on fire with claims that Obama has affronted real American patriots everywhere. Seriously. Fox News told them so. It is quite impressive to read the horrible, profane and undeniably disrespectful names these patriots are calling Mr. Obama while simultaneously screaming that he has no respect for our armed forces. The same right wing which always used to say that whoever holds the office should be treated respectfully. There was no such reaction when President George W. Bush once saluted Marines awkwardly while clutching his dog (and there shouldnt have been). But why didnt all you arbiters of respect have a collective conniption fit then? There wasnt any talk of a Schnauzer Salute. The truth is that presidents are not required by any protocol to salute the troops. It is an act invented by Ronald Reagan for his own reasons. That presidents have done it since is only to appease those who mistakenly believe the lie that this is the way its supposed to be and always has been. Its a shameful type of politics which the GOP uses to distract from its own failure to do a single thing to help the country for the past six years.
