A HAND PRINT ON A WALL IN JIM THORPE IS CONSIDERED TO BE 1 OF THE BIGGEST UNSOLVED MYSTERIES IN THE COAL REGION. Click LIKE if you are intrigued & curious about the the hand print that wont go away inside Cell 17 at the old Carbon County Jail. Down through the decades many stories were written & tales were told about the mysterious hand print. Several questions remained unanswered to this date. The biggest question: who planted that eternal print? Was it Alex Campbell or Tom Fisher--reputed members of the Molly Maguires? Was it Charles Sharp or Jim McConnell? Were the 7 alleged Mollies hanged in Jim Thorpe truly guilty or were they framed by the coal company? Another mystery is the hand print itself. Old newspaper reports say the print was that of a right hand. But, as you can see in the photo below, we see a left hand print. Many efforts have been made to erase that 5-fingered smudge on the wall. It was washed, scrubbed, & painted over. In 1930, the warden of the jail had the wall knocked down & replaced. The print returned. Unsolved Mysteries forensic experts investigated the hand print in the 1990s. Their findings were listed as inconclusive. The jail was built in 1871 & functioned as a prison through 1995. It has over 70 rooms, 27 cells, plus a basement dungeon that was used for solitary confinement until 1980. The jail also had spacious quarters for the warden. The historic jail was purchased by a Jim Thorpe couple in 1995 & is currently 1 of Carbon Countys premier tourist destinations. Why? There have been documented reports of hauntings by 100s of visitors down through the years. More info about tours of the jail that include a visit to Cell 17 can be found at theoldjailmuseum.
