A NOTE FROM MAYOR ERIC GARCETTI Clearly, one of our immediate priorities is getting our infrastructure fixed and traffic moving again after the water main break on Sunset, near UCLA. It was a major event, involving millions of gallons of water, but our crews are working around the clock so the area can get back to normal as soon as possible. If you travel through the area, please plan ahead, and if you commute by bus, please check twitter/metrolosangeles Were now in year two of my administration, and my Back to Basics agenda has successfully laid the foundation for a more efficient and effective government. Heres a great snapshot of my first year in office -- including DWP reform, the highest possible credit ratings from all three ratings agencies, and tens of thousands of new jobs . The Washington Post also interviewed me about my first year, and the LA Times just wrote extensively about my Great Streets Initiative. I also just began my year as Chair of the Metro (MTA) Board. You can read about my focus on cutting traffic, including making sure we fix a big mistake of the past by finally bringing rail to LAX. Just this weekend we took a big step forward by demolishing the bridge at Century and Aviation. We planned ahead to avoid a Carmageddon and the demolition was finished ahead of schedule. Over the next year, I will use my simultaneous offices as Mayor and Metro Chair to make sure we efficiently build the critical transit and airport infrastructure we need to reduce congestion and bolster our economy. I am also proud to report that our Summer of Success initiative is now full steam ahead and is serving tens of thousands of L.A. youth. Find out how you can help Summer of Success prepare our youth for the economy of tomorrow and help reduce crime during these long summer nights. We have also launched specific initiatives to help our veterans. As a Navy reservist, its even more meaningful to me that we created our 10,000 Strong veterans hiring initiative and that I was able to stand with First Lady Michelle Obama to announce our pledge to end veteran homelessness. And we just took another big step toward public safety by appointing a new fire chief and restarting hiring at the fire department through a reformed process to ensure we hire the best possible firefighters. Please stay in contact with whatever thoughts or feedback you have via email, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (and check out the New York Times take on my photography here!). Many thanks. - Mayor Eric Garcetti Yeghig Keshishian External Affairs Liaison Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (213) 978-8376
